I had the opportunity to capture family portraits for a fellow photographer and dear friend here in London. I was feeling a bit nervous before we started, as this was my first all-film session, and I know this darling family very well (which can go one of two ways, and I got lucky this time!). Rachel really wanted film, both black and white and color, and I love the result. The images below were shot with my Contax 645 on Portra 400 and Kodak Tri-X. We started near the Thames, walked Green Park, Horse Guards, and ended at Trafalgar Square. Sadly, our great plan for the Trafalgar Square lions was foiled by a private event that blocked off the entire square. The final portraits were shot just south of Nelson’s Column, on a spot that is at the very center of London (there’s even a plaque stating as much!). We had the loveliest morning out on a perfect autumn day, and I’m very happy to have shared in the memories made on this day.
One of the most difficult parts of leaving London next summer will be saying goodbye to these dear friends of ours. Rachel and I go on the best adventures with our little ones, and we have so much in common, sometimes I can’t believe it. It’s the very best kind of friendship. As you’ll see, Rachel and her husband have three beautiful children whose ages align perfectly with our own. Our husbands are good friends as well, so we’re the perfect match because everyone has a friend! They’re friends that feel like family, and we are so blessed to have met them. I have a feeling that when we return to NYC, and they return to Boston, these photographs of the L Family in London will be on both our walls, to remind us of our very happy memories here.
